Description
Netflix's controversial "13 Reasons Why" series has swept the nation up in discussions on mental health and suicide, and it's time to talk about it.
The Hult Center for Healthy Living, in partnership with Whitney's Walk, Peoria Regional Office of Education, and Human Service Center, will host a community discussion on Tuesday, May 16th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Hult Center.
Kay Blankenship, LCPC, Behavioral Health Clinical Counselor for the Hult Center, will discuss guidelines for families, educators, and safe messaging, with Q & A to follow.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, teen suicide is the second leading cause of death in individuals between the ages of 10 - 24. This fact indicates that teen suicide is an important topic which requires thoughtful dialogue among children and families, educators and mental health providers.
Concerns exist among mental health professionals and youth advocates that teenagers are binge watching the series or reading the book without adult supervision. There is a concern that children may be unable to process the issues addressed within the series or to consider the consequences of certain choices made by the characters.
Whether you're a parent, counselor, teacher, or concerned citizen, all are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please RSVP online at www.hulthealthy.org to attend
