Description
Gimme Shelter is an event hosted by the South Side Office of Concern to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those in our community without homes and to give our citizens an opportunity to help end homelessness. The event will be held outside the Peoria Civic Center on the evening of January 19, 2018. Each participant is asked to raise $1,000 for the “privilege” of spending the night, from 6:00 pm in the evening until 6:00 am the next morning, in a cardboard box.
Gimme Shelter will bring our community together, raise awareness of the plight of those with nowhere to call home, and provide a powerful opportunity to learn more about homelessness. Participants will experience a bit of what it might be like to be outside, overnight, in the coldest part of a Central Illinois winter. Proceeds from Gimme Shelter will benefit the South Side Office of Concern and support our continuing efforts to end homelessness in our community. The event will also feature educational presentations focused around the topic of homelessness and the challenges it poses for our society.
Card board boxes will be provided.
Teams of any size are welcome! So get your friends, co-workers, or church members together to form a team. Teams are entitled to one box for each $1,000 they attempt to raise. For example, a team that needs four boxes should set a goal of raising $4,000.
Gimme Shelter will be held regardless of weather conditions - because those that are homeless can’t always come in out of the elements.
No space heaters or camp stoves allowed. Please bundle up and bring sleeping bags, blankets, tarps, etc.
Children are welcome to participate, but
must be accompanied by an adult. No pets, please!
Food and beverages will be provided throughout the night. Participants will be able to warm up inside the Civic Center as needed. Indoor restrooms will also be accessible all night!
Prizes for the top fundraisers and top teams! Each participant will also receive a special Gimme Shelter t-shirt.
The event will end with a delicious hot celebration breakfast on Saturday morning.
